Burning wood has a low heat capacity compared to the water that makes up our bodies, so although firewalkers step on coals at a sizzling 550 degrees Celsius (1,000 degrees Fahrenheit), the amount of thermal energy the coals hold is small. Wood and ash are also excellent heat insulators.
